It will be my first real "shoot" as I haven't done many portraits yet and I haven't gotten much practice with the flash yet. Basically is f/9 going to give the same DOF with a flash as it would with available light of relatively the same level?Ī friend is having a going away dinner next Wednesday and I want to take some picture of all of us that are going. I just got my flash a few days ago and haven't had a chance to test much yet, although I plan to do some tests tonight. I've also kind of been wondering how aperture affects DOF with flash. So ideally for the flash to be able to eliminate motion is by stopping down the aperture or maybe a lower ISO so that ambient light doesn't play any factor for the exposure, correct? ![]() Also noticed when at f/4 or higher was used I see a much sharper image with darker background meaning less ambient light in thus allowing the flash to effectively freeze motion. I was just looking at photos that I have taken with flash recently and most of the blurry photos are close to wide open f/2.8 trying to meter as close to the recommended exposure by the camera and also trying limit DOF at the same time causing ambient light to overpower flash. So the key here really is just underexposing for ambient light low enough for the flash to effectively stop any motion. You're going to want to try to maximise ambient light (room lighting?), stop the toddler squirming (sedatives?), or under expose the ambient and use the flash for exposure to get your shutter speed up and get that shot (presuming things like ISO and aperture are already pushed as far as you can or are comfortable doing).Ĭanon 5D | Canon BG-e4 | Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L | Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L | Canon EF 135mm f/2 L | Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 | Speedlite 580ex II | Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 | Giottos MT 9360 with Manfrotto 488 RC2 The flash will stop the motion, but only for a fraction of a second. If you're trying to shoot 1/60th or lower at 200mm on a lens as heavy as the 70-200 f/2.8, you're going to get camera shake, unless you're a trained marksman Add a squirmy toddler into that and you're in trouble. This can be a cool effect, but also a bit annoying. This results in ghosting or blurring, with just the 1/2000 sec (or whatever the flash duration is, I don't actually know, I'm not too up on all the tech) frozen by the flash. The rest of the time, you will get the same camera shake or motion blur as you would without the flash. The stabilized video will appear as a new video in your YT account.Flash freezes motion, yes, but only for the fraction of a second that the flash is lit.
